The Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover Foundation was organized in 2010 to memorialize Carl: an 11-year-old who thought his only recourse from the torment he faced at school was to end his life a few days short of his 12th birthday. The foundation has been able to award scholarships to high school graduating seniors who have demonstrated efforts to combat bullying in their schools and communities.
To apply for the 2013 school year, please visit www.carljoseph.org/apply. Applications are due February 28, 2013 with the scholarships presented at the annual gala in April. Applicants must have a minimum 2.50 GPA, proof of passing the MCAS or equivalent test and a letter from a college of university stating attendance after graduation. Applicants must also write an essay on the topic of their efforts to combat bullying in their school or community and include an official high school transcript.
This year, the foundation will award $16,000 in scholarships in honor of what would have been Carl’s 16th birthday.
